A Bit of
History
Since
its beginning, Sausalito has been many things to may people. For
more than a century, fully rigged sailing ships have taken shelter
along the waterfront. Visitors today have a unique opportunity to
view some of he historic classic yachts and sailing vessels in the
world.
Points of
Interest
The
northern region of Sausalito was once a major ship building site
for World War II including, Liberty ships, tankers, and landing
craft. This area known as the Marinship, later became a haven for
artists, writers and crafts people. Examples of their unique
lifestyle and unusual architecture are visible in the colony of
floating homes moored along the Marinship waterfront.
Many
artisans, local and from around the world, feature their work in the
Sausalito Art Festival held every Labor Day weekend. The festival
sponsored by the
Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, attracts over 50,000
visitors during the three day holiday.
San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center, Sausalito California
The Bay Model is
three-dimensional hydraulic model of the San Francisco and Delta
areas capable of simulating tides, currents and river inflows.
The Model is
over 1.5 acres in size and represents an area from the Pacific Ocean
to Sacramento and Stockton including the San Francisco, San Pablo
and Suisun Bays, and a portion of the San Joaquin Delta.
The Bay
Model Visitors Center, located in the Marinship area, provides
scientists, educators and visitors an opportunity to view the San
Francisco Bay and Delta region at a glance. Exhibits and tours are
Tuesday through Saturday. Audio tours are in English, French,
German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

Shopping
Shopping varies from village markets with local wares to
sophisticated boutiques and galleries. Take a promenade winding
through the architectural rich streets. Stop in the Visitors Center
and historical exhibit at Bay and Bridgeway.
The best
kept secret in Sausalito California, are the
Artist Open Studios,
located in the ICB Building. It is the largest art source and art
gallery in the City of Sausalito.
