A Brief
History
Since its beginning,
Sausalito has been many things to many people. For more than
a century, fully rigged sailing ships have taken shelter
along the waterfront. Visitors today have a unique
opportunity to view some of the historic boats, classic
yachts and sailing vessels in Sausalito’s scenic harbors and
marinas.
The
northern region of Sausalito was once a major ship building
site during World War II Liberty ships, tankers, and landing
craft were manufactured in Sausalito. This area, known as
the Marinship, later became a haven for artists, writers and
crafts people who remain today. Their unique and bohemian
lifestyle thrives in this area still, as well as Sausalito’s
colony of floating homes.
