I have
been a practicing artist for the past 40 years. In the past 10 years my work
has become
increasingly more literary and with philosophical. I am now as engaged with
writing as with the visual arts and seeks to bring together by writing about
the art world and marking art about ideas.
Joanne has had exhibitions in major cities
across the U.S., and has received a number of awards for her mixed media
work.
The paintings that you are about to see
are multi-layered paintings. They consist of several sheets of collaged and
painted Plexiglas. First I create a painting on canvas that is
compositionally complete.
This is mounted on the first sheet. Then I
add images. I take some of the pictures with a digital camera, some images
are found and scanned. I manipulate the color, size, and texture of the
image and print it on clear film. I then adhere the images to the subsequent
sheets of acrylic.
I add more paint as I build, shuffling and
reworking each sheet as I go. When assembled, the colors and images
composite with those above and below to give an impression of floating,
groundlessness and depth.
Because the layers are separated, light is
allowed to come inside illuminating the painting from within. The disparate
images in the finished piece invite us to create meanings and in doing so we
experience the depths of our own minds.
