I lived my early life in Passaic, New Jersey, not too far from the
Hudson River and close to New York City. My early memories include
frequent trips to the city with the family to enjoy the musicals and
movies of Broadway, Radio City Music Hall and the city’s museums.
Classical music, opera and books filled our home. From these experiences
I developed a life-long love, respect and admiration for the arts.
Following college, San Francisco became my home. There I first saw the
golden light of the California sunshine that I still recall. I watched
its brilliant yellow beams cast their shadows across the city’s hills
and spires. In 1973 I met Lance Kostrobala, an artist, who’s been my
life-partner ever since. Our private and professional lives intertwined
in 1975 when we formed an art and design company.
My career as a photographer began in 1979. Encouraged to capture the
world I saw through the lens, my partner gave me my first camera. Trial,
error and experiments in black and white and color photography honed my
techniques. I developed a love of portraiture. Entertainers and models
became my clientele. An admirer of George Hurrell, I favored the use of
a single source light in my work. In the studio I felt the thrill of
being a photographer. In the darkroom I lost track of time and
experienced the magic of making pictures.
Over thirty years my subjects have changed – from faces to flowers, from
people to products, from interiors to events. In that time the world of
photography has evolved as well. The smallest mobile phones now capture
what we see. Photography requires no film. Computers and software create
astonishing effects.
We now live in northern Thailand and our home is in a semi-tropical
forest. A tree grows through the middle of our house and its young
tender leaves are delicious when prepared by our Thai cook. A koi-filled
pond lay before us while the lush green foothills of the Himalayan
Mountains rise around us.
Though far from my years near New York, there are constants still in my
life: my partner by my side; music and art fill our home; beauty and
books abound; and I still love the camera when I look through its lens.
