Don McCartney, Artist
has been painting vivid watercolors using luminous ink-like transparent
dyes and reproducing his work digitally. Recently, his work has focused
on capturing the minute abstract vistas and patterns created when water
and pigment do their wet-dry dance on archival paper.
Finished pieces are reproduced in
sizes ranging from 16"x 20" to 4'x 6'. Some of these watercolors have
become integrated into his "Money Series", a digital collage project
monumentalizing aspects of the graphics found on everyday currency. When
reproduced in larger than life scale these prints have a startlingly
bold graphic presence with delightful color.
Don was educated at Ringling
College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL and graduated in 1968 with
honors and a A.A. in Commercial Design. After a year at a design studio
in St. Louis, MO, he moved to the Bay Area and started his publishing
career in the art department of Rolling Stone magazine.
This lead to: Art Director, Clear Creek magazine, Art Director, Francis
Ford Coppola’s City magazine and U.C. Berkeley’s Alumni magazine,
California Monthly, Senior Designer, Art Director and Design Director at
the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle for
25 years, where he received more than 50 awards of excellence for his
McCartney runs his own company,
Diablo Graphic Design, where his clients range from ballet (Company C
Contemporary Ballet) to booze (The American Distilling Institute) and
beyond. He makes clients look their best in print, while continuing his
fine art projects.
Don has taught classes in

Francisco State University and the Academy of Art, San Francisco.
