Mission Statement /
Art Works Downtown, Inc.'s principal
purpose is to establish and maintain a charitable center for the
arts in downtown San Rafael; to assist the City in its plan to
revitalize and redevelop the city with emphasis on culture and
history; to encourage artistic activities; to educate the public
and increase its appreciation of art; and to strengthen the
relationship between artists, arts organizations, and the larger
community.
How Art Works
Downtown achieves its goals /
By owning and maintaining a center for the arts on Fourth
Street, Art Works Downtown plays a significant role in
revitalizing and redeveloping San Rafael with emphasis on
culture and history. AWD works to encourage artistic activities
in San Rafael in six program areas:
- Studios /
providing affordable workspace to more than 40 local artists
and organizations. The studios provide an ongoing
opportunity for the public to visit and view art in the
making.

Exhibitions /
providing a formal gallery for Bay Area artists and informal
exhibitions throughout the building.
- Education
/ offering classes for all ages in a wide range
of media.

Events /
presenting gallery shows, lectures, readings,
demonstrations, field trips, open studios, and facilities
for community use.

Housing /
providing seventeen affordable apartments available
to qualified artists and others.
- Outreach
/ cooperating with existing arts organizations in
making art an everyday experience for the community.

Fund Raising /
We are supported by the public, including individuals and
businesses, and by foundations such as The Marin Community
Foundation. AWD is registered as a 501(c) (3) charitable
organization.
AWD Fall Open Studios
November 10 & 11, 11 - 5pm
Visit over 40 artists in their studios.
